Dental Explorers are commonly used in dentistry to detect tooth decay, as a counter and to pick debris between gums and teeth. Explorers have sharp point at the end(s) and also used to enhance tactile sensation.
Explorers can be single or double ended and have a wide range of shapes; Explorer No. 17/23 is most commonly used. It is also called shepherd's hook; It has a hook-like shape at the one end the angled design at the other end which is useful for the interproximal areas between teeth.
